Storing Coffee Beans

With the price of coffee going up we are getting a lot more inquiries about storing coffee.  This post will be a quick and to the point post, with a more detailed page or pages coming later.

The most common question is about green coffee bean storage.

Question 1.  How long will green coffee beans keep?

Answer: We only buy the current crop available so depending on the crop cycle, the green coffee beans we get are anywhere from 3 to 12 months after harvest date.  I would suggest buying no more than 6 months worth of coffee at a time for best results.  Store them in a cool dry place, not directly on concrete.  In a food pantry for example.  You can transfer them into ziplock storage bags if you like or even vac seal them to extend the storage time to over 12 months.  We store the bags on pallets in our small warehouse. More detailed explanation coming on later pages.

Question 2.  How long will roasted coffee store?

Answer:  This one is easy from my point of view.  2 to 4 weeks max.  Try to only buy 2 weeks worth at a time.  I know everyone wants to save money and buy in bulk, but the quality of the coffee will be sacrificed.  More detailed explanation coming on later pages.

Question 3.  Can I freeze roasted coffee?

Answer:  Yes.  But only the coffee you are storing, NOT the coffee you use daily. More detailed explanation coming on later pages.
